U.S.- China Principal Shadowing Project

中美教育管理者互学项目

 

         

 

The U.S.-China Principal Shadowing Project (PSP) provides a unique opportunity for school administrators­--superintendents and principals--to learn about and observe one another's educational systems from close up.  Each October principals from China visit schools in the United States.  After attending lectures on American education at universities, schools, and departments of education, they shadow partner principals or superintendents on the job, live in host families, visit classes, and participate in a variety of school and community events. One of the visitors described the experience as "a treasure."  American administrators reunite with their counterparts in China in April for comparable parallel experiences. To date, CEI has sponsored PSPs in Connecticut, Indiana, Massachusetts and Oklahoma. The U.S.-China Principal Shadowing Project is co-sponsored by the China Exchange Initiative (CEI) and the China Education Association for International Exchanges (CEAIE) of China's Ministry of Education.

If, when they are adults, our children and our nation are to be viable players and partners in our global community, then we need to revise our educational program to reflect the world they will encounter. Now is the time for us to expand our curricula to include the study of Asian, African, and Latino cultures. We owe it to our students to help them understand these important cultures and appreciate the strength found within the diversity they represent. As part of this effort, it is imperative that we offer a variety of world languages to younger students and do so across the spectrum of U.S. schools.”

U.S.-China School Exchange Programs

The China Exchange Initiative initiates and provides consultation for U.S.-China school partnerships working with other organizations throughout the United States and China. In the U.S. we work with state departments of education, university centers, and non-profit collaborations. In China we work with CEAIE of the Ministry of Education, provincial and municipal bureaus of education, and bureaus of foreign affairs.

Massachusetts  马萨诸塞州

U.S.-China school partners throughout Massachusetts exchange students and teachers.  Participating schools: Braintree, Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Burlington, Concord, Danvers, Dover-Sherborn, Lexington, Lincoln-Sudbury, Longmeadow, Melrose, Needham, Newton, Pembroke, South Hadley, Sharon, Winchester. Other schools are sending teachers and administrators on study tours to strengthen connections through organizations such as Primary Source and Pathways to China.

Newton

Now in its 25th year, the Newton-Beijing Jingshan School Exchange Program welcomes a delegation of students and teachers each fall semester.  Newton's counterpart delegation spends each spring semester in Beijing.

Dover-Sherborn

China Exchange Journal

Now in its 6th year, the Dover-Sherborn - Hangzhou Exchange Program sends a delegation of 4 students and one teacher to China for eight weeks starting around Chinese New Year.  The Hangzhou High School delegation of 4 students and one teacher accompanies the D-S group back to Dover at the beginning of April for a 6 week stay.

Connecticut  康那提卡州

Dan Gregg, at the Connecticut State Department of Education, has introduced over 100 Connecticut-Shandong partner schools as part of a state-province agreement to encourage business and cultural exchange. Such cross-fertilization results in a variety of on-going projects: exchange of teachers and students, distance curriculum projects, school-college collaborations for pedagogy and technology, school-business collaboration; and summer "camp" for Chinese language.

 

         

New Hampshire  新罕布什州

Pinkerton Academy has a thriving partnership with a school in Tianjin under the leadership of John Barry, who is creating new partnerships between schools in New Hampshire and schools in Tianjin.

Oklahoma   俄克拉荷玛州

Twenty Oklahoma schools are sending and receiving delegations between Oklahoma and Beijing, Chengdu, and Chongqing, working with Dr. Jessica Stowell of OKITEA (Oklahoma Institute for Teaching East Asia) at the University of Oklahoma. Some school partners are in their second, third, or fourth round of exchanging teachers and students.   School partnerships help to anchor the Oklahoma-Sichuan state-province partnership, which developed from a pilot training project.

 

         

Indiana  印第安那州

Global Indiana, founded by Phil Boley, superintendent of Clinton Central Schools and Chris McGrew of Purdue University, is an education consortium formed to promote international education and to connect Indiana schools with schools in other parts of the world. For connection to China, twenty-two Indiana schools are partnered with schools in Dalian and Anshan in Liaoning Province. The Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) has undertaken a shadowing project with Anshan.

 

         

Kansas  勘萨斯州

Kansas has initiated exchanges with schools in Kaifeng and Xian under the leadership of the Kansas Consortium for Teaching about Asia (KCTA), led by Bill Tsutsui and Nancy Hope at the University of Kansas. KCTA is also leading the effort to promote Chinese language studies in Kansas schools.

 

         

North Carolina  北卡罗来那州

The Center for International Understanding at University of North Carolina, in conjunction with a state effort to link North Carolina schools with schools in other countries, has connected fifteen North Carolina schools with schools in Jiangsu and Hangzhou.

Pathways to China中国之窗

Pathways to China: Five Massachusetts schools and school systems, under the direction of Rachel Zucker of Burlington (MA) Public Schools, collaborated in the design of a course to offer Massachusetts students in grades 8-12 an opportunity to study about Chinese culture, history, and society through twenty-four online learning modules in combination with classroom instruction and travel. The interdisciplinary learning modules are available to other school systems. The students from many districts who opt to participate in the course qualify for a study tour that will include school and home stays.

School-Museum Collaboration  学校-展览馆合作项目

The Peabody Essex Museum's Yin Yu Tang project connects Newton students with a county school in Anhui Province to collect oral history information for the Museum, which is located in Salem, Massachusetts.  Several delegations of administrators from Xiuning County Middle School have visited Newton; delegations of students and teachers from Newton have visited Xiuning in alternating years.

The Brick Project “砖头”项目

The Brick Project connects schools in different countries, including one in China, for shared classroom projects involving some aspect of international concern.  Students, 11-14 years old, and their teachers communicate in writing over the Internet on a common topic twice a month during the school year.  In the process they learn about one another's lives and schools and improve their expressive English language skills.

 

 

CCAT 网络合作项目

 

The CATALYST-China™ Program, designed by Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, has as its primary focus the exchange of information using a set of inquiry-based enrichment and intercultural collaboration activities aligned to both U.S. and China curriculum standards, in a sixteen-week after school program. Seventh and eighth grade students from Horace W. Porter School in Columbia, Connecticut and their Chinese sister school, Jinan Foreign Language School in Shandong Province, spent the 2006-2007 academic year taking part in CATALYST-China™ program.
