Purpose

The purpose of the China Exchange Initiative is to build and support educational exchange programs and administrator shadowing projects between schools in the United States and schools in China at the pre-college level.  Because the United States and China will be the world's leaders in the 21st century, it is essential that the people, especially the students, of the two countries develop understanding and friendship.  The new global economy requires an international education.  Exchange programs provide opportunities for students, teachers, administrators, and families in school communities on both sides to become involved in the excitement of intercultural learning.

Leadership

Charlotte Mason is a former teacher at Newton (MA) North High School and exchange teacher in Beijing (1989), and co-chair of the National Commission for Asia in the Schools (2000). They were for many years the co-chairs of an exchange program between the Newton Public Schools and the Beijing Jingshan School.  Peihui Wang, a former English teacher at Chengdu No.7 High School, a former exchange teacher at Cambridge (MA) Rindge and Latin School (1996-1997), is a specialist in Intercultural Leadership and Management.

Each year the CEI staff visits schools in China and in the United States.  We have learned through long experience and many trials and errors how best to involve the community, maximize opportunities for students and teachers, enrich curriculum, build multicultural understanding, and enjoy international friendships, while keeping costs to a minimum. On both sides, host families can provide housing, teachers teach in classrooms, and students attend classes.

Funding

The China Exchange Initiative is funded by a grant from the Freeman Foundation to develop educational exchange programs between schools in the US and schools in China.
